The Friday Market at Ventimiglia, Italy
October 12, 2007
The wonderful little Citroën Pluriel we had rented for the week
parked on the Grande Corniche near La Turbie.
Looking northward from the Grande Corniche toward the Alps.
What a view they must have from that house!
The SNCF train from Nice arriving in Ventimiglia.
A closer view - one of their very new electric trains for short intercity runs.
Arriving in the Italian city of Ventimiglia, midway between Nice and Genoa.
We came for the famous Friday Market and on the way back to France stopped at the Villa Hanbury near the border.
The pedestrian bridge across the river to the old part of the city.
Another view of the old city showing the proximity of the mountains.
Menton, France is on the other side of the highest mountain in view.
The Market stretches for about a half mile along the river and then
another half mile along the promenade by the sea.
Enormous crowds that lasted all day. We put some Euros into the local economy!
The old part of the city is visible on the hill in the distance.
The beach at Ventimiglia with a view to the mountains and France beyond.
Most of the beaches along this area of the Mediterranean are not sandy but rather gravel, mostly coarse and rounded
but smooth. The water is incredibly blue and clear and at this time it was around 78°. I did get to go swimming
later in the week back in France.
A view of the old part of the city and the mountains from the beach.
Some of the Market stalls are visible at the bottom of the picture.
More of the crowds along the sea front part of the Market.
Passing these stalls cost us a lot.
Dennis is on the right in the stripes.
The charming little park in the center of things.
Another view of the foot bridge and the Old City.
Luncheon was al fresco and not very good.
It was a hot day!
Looking toward the sea which was quite close by.
A final look up at the Old City.
Westward to the Villa Hanbury
Under construction!

Driving west on the Basse Corniche

The Mediterranean looking eastward toward
Ventimiglia in the far distance.
