Bei Nacht im Dorf der Wächter rief: Elfe!	At night in the village the watchman cried "Eleven!"
Ein ganz kleines Elfchen im Walde schlief	A very small elf was asleep in the wood -
wohl um die Elfe!	just at eleven! -
Und meint, es rief ihm aus dem Tal	And he thinks that the nightingale
bei seinem Namen die Nachtigall,	must have called him by name from the valley,
oder Silpelit hätt' ihm gerufen.	or Silpelit might have sent for him.
Reibt sich der Elf' die Augen aus,	So the elf rubs his eyes,
begibt sich vor sein Schneckenhaus	comes out of his snail-shell house,
und ist als wie ein trunken Mann,	and is like a drunken man,
sein Schläflein war nicht voll getan,	his nap was not finished;
und humpelt also tippe tapp	and he hobbles down, tip tap,
durch's Haselholz in's Tal hinab,	through the hazel wood into the valley,
schlupft an der Mauer hin so dicht,	slips right up to the wall;
da sitzt der Glühwurm Licht an Licht.	there sits the glow-worm, light on light.
»Was sind das helle Fensterlein?	"What are those bright windows?
Da drin wird eine Hochzeit sein:	There must be a wedding inside;
die Kleinen sitzen bei'm Mahle,	the little people are sitting at the feast,
und treiben's in dem Saale.	and dancing about in the ballroom.
Da guck' ich wohl ein wenig 'nein!«	So I'll just take a peep in!"
Pfui, stößt den Kopf an harten Stein!	Shame! he hits his head on hard stone!
Elfe, gelt, du hast genug?	Well, elf, had enough, have you?
Gukuk!	Cuckoo! Cuckoo!
